When you start creating content you should always think reader first. Non-linear read navigation refers to how a user moves through the content of a Foleon doc in a non-restricted free fashion. With the right navigation options your readers will be more successful and engaged when they consume your content. We'll explore different non-linear read navigation options in this lesson and teach you how to use them to create a seamless reader experience for your audience. Do you want your reader to go through your content from start to finish? Or to give them navigation tools and location awareness to move around freely. If you create a Foleon doc that you want your audience to read from start to finish like an ebook, case study, or newsletter, linear read navigation is your pick. But if you want your reader to take the wheel, move around and find what they need as fast as possible, non-linear navigation options are suitable for your next doc, like in a hub or catalog. When planning the layout and content of your doc, you also need to decide how you want your reader to go through it. Navigation design is one of the most important factors affecting user experience and the ROI of your Foleon docs. Without a proper navigation design, readers get lost and will leave. Help your reader feel in control and confident while navigating they want to understand how your doc works, where they are, and how to move around. Remember to offer them some fun while reading too. Trigger their curiosity to navigate further and stay in your Foleon doc. Let's go through an example of a handbook and see the non-linear navigation options I've applied the first page is an index or contents, it's clickable to encourage your reader to go directly to the page or section of their interest on the top you see buttons to navigate down to blocks on the page, these are anchor links. Feel free to use them, but only if readers can safely skip specific parts of the page. And at the bottom, you see a footer with navigation options helping your reader with location awareness within the doc and encouraging them to keep going. On regular websites large Footers are often used. In our opinion, this is the most polite way to end a doc page. And lastly, in this example the page arrows are enabled, however, if for the doc you're creating a strictly non-linear read navigation, it's necessary to disable these in the settings, as technically speaking there is no next page, just the next interesting topic. You probably noticed the navigation bar at the top as well. The navigation bar is enabled by default and lets your audience navigate to different pages of your Foleon doc. When you open the navigation bar you see a grid of images, and when I hover over it, a description for each page. Let's dive into the settings to show you what to toggle on and off, and what other choices you can make. You can show your page overview in a grid or horizontally. A grid shows the non-linear correlation between pages the best. Let's try this newest grid structure for a strictly non-linear reading experience you can disable your page arrows and the sneak peek here, but I'll leave it on in this example. While I'm in the settings I want to turn off the progress bar. This neat feature indicates how far into the doc the reader is. It's great for linear docs like ebooks, it doesn't make much sense in a handbook, where the readers move around freely. Also you can modify the pages shown in the navigation bar. For example you can exclude the cover and the closing page. Name pages wisely so they reflect the content of the page. Let's upload a nice image to this page and add a short description. Great! I think we're all done here. Let's check the preview it's all there, and we're smoothly guiding our readers around the doc. That's it, I hope this lesson has given you a clear and actionable overview of the different Navigation features to create a seamless reading experience for your audience. Now just a quick recap of what we discussed - Do you want to give your reader the clarity and options to move freely around your Foleon doc? Then non-linear read navigation is the way to go. Set the navigation features accordingly to serve your reader, provide location awareness, and persuade them to keep reading. Good luck creating an engaged reader experience in your next Foleon doc!
